My Approach to Parent Coaching

My parent coaching work is grounded in decades of lived and professional experience supporting children, youth, and families. I am a youth counsellor and Registered Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP), a retired foster parent with over 18 years of service, and a parent of five including an adult autistic son. I am also a proud grandparent. This background shapes a practical, child-focused approach to complex family situations.

I work with parents who are navigating ongoing stress, communication breakdowns, high-conflict dynamics, or court-involved parenting. Coaching focuses on understanding patterns, strengthening regulation, and developing clear, realistic strategies that support children and reduce escalation.

My approach is structured and forward-focused. Sessions centre on practical tools, decision-making support, and accountability, rather than advice-giving or therapy. I do not provide medical, psychological, or nutritional guidance.

I regularly support parents raising both neurotypical and neurodivergent children, including families impacted by ADHD, autism, FASD, ODD, and other behavioural or developmental challenges. Coaching is tailored to each family’s context, with an emphasis on stability, consistency, and the best interests of the child.

I am also currently accepting family mediation clients while working toward my AccFM and Q.Med designations. I have attended York University’s Family Mediation Certificate program.

Client Review

"I am in a very high-conflict, post divorce situation. I was very hesitant about starting coaching sessions with Jenn because of a previous parent therapist who was not being honest. Due to it being court ordered, I had no choice but to make an appointment. Fast forward about a half of a year and I am so glad to have Jenn in my life. She listens without judgement, she understands and has compassion for what people are going through. She is a light in the darkness and has taught me so many things on how to maneuver through this tough stretch of life. Because of her, I have a new perspective on my situation and can honestly say I'm happier than I have been in a long time. Jenn truly is an amazing person and coach, and I am so thankful for her services."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I was ordered by the court to do parent coaching. What does that actually involve? A: We meet via Zoom for one-hour sessions focused on practical parenting strategies, communication, and reducing conflict for the benefit of your children. Sessions are structured and solution-focused — not therapy. You set the pace.

Q: Will you report back to the court or my lawyer? A: If your court order requires written documentation, I can provide session summaries and professional correspondence with legal parties. Any administrative time beyond our session is billed at the same hourly rate. We discuss this clearly before we begin.

Q: Do I have to commit to a certain number of sessions? A: No packages, no commitments. You book when you need it. Some parents come for one session, others check in regularly over months. It’s entirely up to you and what your situation requires.

Q: Is this therapy? A: No. Parent coaching is practical and forward-focused. I don’t diagnose, treat, or provide psychological services. If therapy is needed, I’ll say so and can point you toward appropriate resources.

Q: What if I disagree with being ordered to do this? A: That’s completely understandable and more common than you might think. You don’t have to agree with the process to benefit from it. My job is to support you — not judge how you got here.

Q: Do you work with both parents separately? A: Yes. In high-conflict situations, I typically work with each parent individually rather than together. This creates a safer space and avoids escalation. Where conflict is especially high, I can also offer shuttle sessions — working with each parent separately to help both sides understand the other’s perspective and find common ground, with the children’s wellbeing always at the centre.

Q: What’s your style — are you going to tell me what I’m doing wrong? A: I’m direct and honest — I won’t sugarcoat things — but I’m also genuinely in your corner. My opinions are always grounded in one thing: what’s best for your child. I’m not here to judge you or take sides. I remain neutral, even when the truth is uncomfortable for one or both parents. That said, you remain the parent. You know your child better than anyone. My job is to offer clarity, perspective, and tools — not to tell you how to run your family. You make the decisions. I just help you make them with more confidence and less noise.

Q: What is your rate? A: Sessions are $140 CAD/hour. All administrative time — including correspondence, documentation, and coordination — is billed at the same rate.

Q: Do you offer a sliding scale? A: Yes. A sliding scale is available for non-court ordered coaching. Please reach out to discuss what works for your situation.
