  • 2 cups cauliflower florets

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 garlic clove

  • 1 tbsp tahini

  • 4 tbsp fresh lime juice

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 1 tsp each of salt and pepper


  • Steam the cauliflower until cooked but not mushy
  • In a food processor, collect remaining ingredients
  • Add cauliflower and process until smooth

    1. I am not sure what you’d be able to sub with. You could try sunflower seed butter but I haven’t tried that. Personally I’d simply omit it, I am sure it would still be humous tasting without the tahini.

      1. Thanks Marc! I miss peanuts, in Thai food but also covered in milk chocolate. Not only because I have twins with anaphylactic peanut allergy but also because of the whole Paleo thing πŸ™‚

    2. You could try replacing it with an almond butter, or i like tossing cauliflower in curry powder and roasting in the oven before turning into a hummus. You can make both almond butter and curry powder at home, that way you can control how much salt your allowing in your diet. Hope this helps πŸ™‚

    3. Made this recipe twice and can’t get enough. Instead of steaming florets, I used a 16 oz. bag of Trader Joe’s riced cauliflower and sauted it a bit. I doubled the tahini and garlic and left out the cumin (not a fan). So yummy!!

  1. Another replacement I have seen for tahini is subbing in an equal quantity of raw cashews. Curious about the lime juice instead of lemon juice. Lemon is traditional for hummus, did you use lime because it tastes better with cauliflower or something?

    1. Hi Heather. Thanks for the comment, raw cashews is a GREAT idea. When I was testing this recipe I had run out of lemons and subbed limes and it was GREAT, plus I hate doing the “traditional” thing :-P. Lemons would be great too though.

    1. You’d have to experiment, unfortunately I haven’t tried anything else (other than old school chickpea humous). You could try eggplant if that is compliant, I bet that would be yummy!

  6. Made it and was VERY hesitant at first as I couldn’t imagine cauliflower (which makes a good sub for potatoes) also sub my love of hummus – but it does!!! Amazing how versatile cauliflower is! I added red pepper flakes for the spice!! YUM!

  8. Do you have any idea how frozen cauliflower would work as opposed to fresh? Not only in this recipe, but in general for recipes that call for cauliflower? Thanks!

    1. Hi Sarah, although I haven’t tried it, I assume frozen would work here because the cauli is blended. If it were for cauli-rice though I would say it may be too mushy. Either way, give it a try and lemme know how it goes?

      1. You’ll probably want to squeeze out the extra liquid after the cauliflower thaws out.

But here’s the thing, I believe there is a SNL skit waiting to happen for this and most foodie blogs. “This dish looks delish,, but could you tell me how it would work, if I replaced (every ingredient) with something different?” Gracious one who is kind enough to cook and share, just say “No”. Live dangerously people, try your variation, if you like, but quit asking the chef to have such answers!

  11. Hot Tip: If you’re not happy with the taste of the Hummus, Still in an 1 egg and a cup of breadcrumbs spiced with chili powder and fresh chives Ad 1/2 cup uncooked, processed cauliflower. Spoon onto a flat baking tray and bake at 350 for 20 minutes, flipping them halfway. You know have amazing cauliflower fritters.

  13. It sounds like a great recipe. I really do love hummus in different varieties. Although I was wondering if I don’t have a food processor will a blender work just the same?
